Hollywood in Detroit: August 2008

JIMMY FALLON PARTY'S W/ DETROIT BY DESIGN @ BANKLE

Why was Detroit By Design and friends entertaining SNL's Jimmy Fallon on Saturday? He's shooting a movie w/ Drew Barrymore and Juliette Lewis on the East Side called "Whip It" based on the acclaimed novel, "Derby Girl". Detroit's impressive creative industry infrastructure has made it an attractive place for the film industry to shoot. Clint Eastwood's also shooting in town... but lets face it. Homeboy's not likely to be spotted at the next Tour Detroit party.

Luxury and Merriment at the City Airport w/ Spyker Automotive
As we made our way through this grandiose special event production, everyone told us that they put on the event. Curious. In all fairness it did seem to be a group effort. Over 30 sponsors made this event happen.

The event wasproduced and or supported by many of our friends including Tony Fayne with Capital Event Productions and Suburban Collection, Jason Dristan w/ Corner Productions, Brian Urso w/ Executive Sports Services, Dan Sordel, Emin and Ronit w/ Clear Magazine, Niki Johnson and Detroit Fashion Pages, Freddie aka Paradime, Michelle from Moo Moos and countless others.

A few additional noteworthy sponsors included Dittrich Fur, Marquis Jets and Kettle One Vodka.
After missing the City Airport Playboy party, which was supposedly a dud, we were excited to attend this function at the airport venue. Outstanding. Well done... whoever produced this event.

Stay Tuned for Bravo Bravo 2008!

Scripps Networks: House of Dreams

Indulge: Scripps' Networks House of Dreams

Hour Magazine, Food Network and Fine Living

Dr. Ron Suarez joined Detroit By Design Director Rich Rice
for a decadent evening
of Indulgence in Northville. The event is an annual party to schmmoze with Ad agency

and Automotive industry clients. The 26 million dollar complex where the event was
held, looked more like the Playboy Mansion or Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch
than a personal residents owned by two very wealthy individuals. Scripps' Networks
footed the bill for this extravagant party selling their Fine Living, Food Network and
HGTV brands.

On the way in to the Turnberry Northville Township subdivision, the million dollar mansions became larger and larger. We followed the signs to a private drive winding through elaborately designed waterfalls, orchards and a private golf course for the two residence. Finally we reached the magnificent home housing this event. No this was only the garage with ornate arches, finely manicured landscape and a dozen handsomely dressed valets eagerly waiting to park the luxurious vehicles of this A-list audience. (Sorry about the old Jeep Cherokee guys).

Upon entering the Mansion dozens of crystal wine flutes on marble tables lined the foyer filled with domain specific French Champagne. After signing in, guests were asked to wear surgical slippers to protect the opulent leather flooring. Being fashionably late, as always, surpluses of the shoe coverings were exhausted, so we we had to check our shoes at the door. So in this fashion, we proceeded inward to enjoy our opportunistic good fortune. Dr. Ron in his gold toe socks and me, stylishly omitting socks for the evening, stuck barefoot to enjoy the most decadent evening of my life.

Matt Prentice Master Sommelier Madeline Triffon and Corporate Chef Jim Barnett
prepared haute-cusine demonstrations and wine tastings including first growth French
Bordeaux wines and seared medallions of
Kobe Beef.
Entertainment also included
Cigar Rolling, massage, grossly extravagant raffles and a live performance by the
local Country band of
Sarah Lenore.

Detroit By Design Moves to the Bankle

Detroit By Design: New Bankle Headquarters

After helping the 555 Studio/Gallery move to Detroit Rich Rice asked a few old friends to help support the art organizations move to Detroit by showing artwork at its first opening called "Connections" in October 2004. Among these special artists was an old friend Camilo Pardo.

Soon afterwards, Camilo and Detroit By Design Director, Rich Rice, mapped out plans for a new era of programming at the Bankle Building with Detroit By Design taking assuming residence with a new office, photography studio and gallery.

In the next year Detroit By Design would host 15 special events in the building working in concert with Camilo Pardo's Art In Development corporation.

Detroit By Design links with 555: Studio/Gallery

Rich Rice links with the 555: Studio/Gallery

On March 23, 2004 Detroit By Design (DBD) Director, Rich Rice, was introduced to the founder and Co-Director of 555 Studio/Gallery, Monte Martinez. A very active and engaging Nine month relationship followed. Detroit By Design came on board as a consultant and political laison to help the Ypsilanti gallery champion organizational challenges. DBD worked alongside 555 council to negotiate a workable building usage agreement with the local municipality. After an agreement was made, the culmination of these efforts materialized in a public relations campaign and fundraiser designed to show the value and sustainablity of this unique collective.

The name "555: A Cultural Outbreak" was chosen for the event to reinforce these ideas. Detroit By Design and the 555: Co-Produced this event that reunified core commuknity supporters, showcased a very strong, energetic and diverse organization and provided financial sustenance to propel the collective into its next building in Woodbridge, Detroit.

Superbadass Becomes Detroit By Design

Serving A More Inclusive Community

Superbadass Production got its name from a quirky thrift store find. A French Blue Car Quest jacket, adorned with the iron-on felt words, Super Bad Ass. The name stuck and soon after, late night parties began to hit the Detroit party scene under the playful and antagonizing moniker. The name worked for the events...Edgy. Underground. Subversive. Shows continued at counter culture late night hot spots including the Red Door and the Bankle Building until the city created a special task force to shut down all illegal after hours facilities.

Years later Superbadass Production shows went above ground in Ann arbor, connecting with established non-profit and progressive community orgs... The look and feel of these events began to change. Superbadass was often truncated to SBA to subdue its in your face first impression.

Popular annual events included a fundraiser for WCBN 88.3 Ann Arbor called Sensual and the Cerebral and a fashion gala event for the Ozone House runaway shelter called Fashion For Food. In 2001 Superbadass Production put on its last show at the Nectarine Ballroom. In 2001, SBA Productions held its last event as the first show for the new Necto Dance Club in Ann Arbor. Fashion For Food IV.

After an extended period retooling the concept and evaluating the sustainable interest in this entity, Rich Rice moved to London and began to layout the plans for Detroit By Design, S2dio Photographic and Four Star Culinaire. In Spring of 2004, he moved back to An Arbor, linked up with 555 Studio/Gallery and held his first co-produced show with the arts organization called "555: A Cultural Outbreak".

He brokered many of his own communications and held every door for passers by, with his favorite phrase, "Apres vous monsieur/madame". He took responsibility for navigating our way through the Metro and wanted to try every Parisian culinary speciatly.

After a long trip on the bus from London, including a ride in the Chunnel, Adren never complained once, and at eleven years old resembled a medical student touring Europe than an American adolescent. How very proud his dad was..

Time For A Change

After a six year roller coaster ride experiencing and producing Detroit and Ann Arbor independent events SBA needed a break. Domestic relations were taxed to the limit and professional aspirations became unclear. For two years SBA refocused, enrolling in an award winning Computer Graphic Technology program, taking on outside internships, instructing digital imaging classes and working marketing jobs for large revenue-generating organizations. After being accepted to a British University work program in the summer of 2006, a badly needed change came about in November 2002 with a temporary relocation to London, England. Here over the next six months of exploring a future in event productions Detroit By Design was conceptualized. Events with Gucci, the BBC, Tower Bridge, The Savoy Hotel, the Oxford and Cambridge Club, The Natural Museum of History, Mike Clark and Diana Gomez influenced the architecture of DBD with hundreds of sketches, notes, drawings, clippings and memories kept in an old French scrap book.

Leilani Garcia Photographs

These pics document a period when I lived with Leilani Garcia. When we started dating I was finishing up my Computer Graphic Technology degree, conceptualizing Detroit By Design, teaching Digital Imaging classes and enjoying playing house. We had just begun training for the Reebok Relay Marathon as I prepared for my BUNAC work program in London for the coming Fall.

Fashion For Food III

Fashion For Food 3 was hosted by Queen Bee and Esquire

Who was a part of this show? Mmmm, I dont remember... Possibly the superstar side project All Up In Your Booty with Pete Liedy, Mike Boyd and Ben Mullen of Midwest Product. Possibly a Stun Gun-Sumber Partry side project cover band Majesty Blush and/or the Madonna cover band summer sensation Borderline. I imagine that Amber Lesicki and Infinite Dimensions was involved, Ziam Penn's Liquid SIlver and Camilo Pardo possibly with a chocolate dipped model.

WCBN 88.3 FM Events

Sensual and the Cerebral

Detroit By Design, formerly known as Superbadass Productions, was very fortunate to provide a showcase for street artists during an amazing period of creative development in Ann Arbor. After the underground venues the Elephanthaus, The Lab and The Green Room closed, there was a period without a proper showcase for non-commercial music and performance. SBA produced this annual off-beat multimedia showcase to raise funds for Ann Arbor's free form public radio station, WCBN 88.3 Ann Arbor.
